The Silicon Ballot
Artist Statement
The 2026 midterm elections have become the most expensive AI policy battleground in history. Anthropic's $20 million pro-regulation PAC faces a $125 million anti-regulation super PAC funded by OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and Andreessen Horowitz. The candidates these groups elect will write the rules governing artificial intelligence for a generation.
This piece imagines the election as what it has become: a monumental mechanism made of the same silicon that powers the technology being debated. The split down the center represents the genuine philosophical divide — safety versus speed, caution versus ambition, guardrails versus open road. The human figures waiting in line are deliberately small, because in a $145 million political campaign, individual voters are not the primary audience. The donors are.
The warm amber left suggests protection, containment, careful stewardship. The electric blue right suggests progress, exposure, unfettered innovation. Neither side is presented as correct because neither side has all the answers. The ballot box itself is the only certainty — the mechanism by which this question will be resolved, regardless of which side spends more.

The oil painting aesthetic was chosen to contrast with the silicon subject matter — rendering digital-age content through analog artistic techniques mirrors the tension between innovation and tradition at the heart of the AI regulation debate.
