The Committee of Clocks

There is a ring of crumbling grey stone floating on the page, curved into a circle that promises a way around and delivers only itself. Nothing about it holds weight, and yet it holds the center of everything — a caged flower, a stopped pocket watch, a scattering of birds too still to have ever flown. The image works the way Dada meant to work: by assembling objects that each make sense alone and refuse to make sense together, until the refusal becomes the meaning.

The birdcage is the joke and the ache of the piece. It has been opened, its door swung wide, and what it holds is not a bird but a single pink bloom rooted where a captive should be. The birds are all outside it, grey and grounded, perched on the stone ring as if waiting for permission that was never theirs to need. The cage did not keep anything in. The cage kept something growing, and the freedom scattered around it looks less like escape than like a crowd that has forgotten what it was fleeing.

Keys drift through the empty spaces, offered to no lock, and a lone pocket watch sits stopped among the birds, its hands giving up the pretense that any of this happens in order. Time here is not a line but a committee — a set of instruments that were supposed to agree and instead each keep their own counsel, none of them moving. In a scene where nothing runs, the only true measure is the two hands at the bottom of the frame.

Those hands, upturned and open, are the whole argument of the painting. They do not reach for the keys or the cage or the watch. They simply wait, palms up, ready to catch whatever the dream decides to drop. It is the most human gesture in a composition that has otherwise abandoned logic entirely — the patience of someone who has stopped trying to control the falling and decided only to be there when it lands.

Prompt
A surreal Dadaist composition on aged ochre paper: a solemn committee of melting antique pocket watches seated around an impossible folding staircase that loops back into itself, a flock of torn-paper birds streaming out of an open brass birdcage that contains a single blooming flower instead of a bird, disembodied gloved hands offering keys to locks that float in mid air, absurd irrational scale and dreamlike juxtaposition, collage cut-paper edges, muted ochre sienna slate and bone palette, soft overcast dream light, anti-art absurdist mood. No text, no letters, no words, no numbers, no signage.
